Many players who are new to the game or are not confident as to when they should bluff or not, or even if they should even try to bluff, the majority of hands they play are actually surrender. What this means is they really don’t know when to bluff and when not to bluff.
In the beginning, I was confident that I could win the tournament with a bluff every time, as I had done well introducing the first two cards, which led me to believe that I was pretty good at bluffing. Eventually, though, as the tournament went on and the players got tougher, my bluff stats improved, but my ability to win the tournament did not! I eventually came in 5th place, behind a legend player who made it to the final table with a higher score than me.
To improve your bluffing stats, you should be consistent and bluff a lot in the early rounds. Make it a habit to bluff if nobody is afraid to call. Bluff a wide range of hands from all positions against unfamiliar players.
A weak poker player is more likely to call a bluff than a strong player. Consequently, if you can identify a weak player and have a good read on them, all you have to do is call or bet. The weaker the player, the more likely you are to gain a free card if you hit a strong hand.
Take advantage of your position at the table. If you are in the first three positions after the big blind, you are in an early position, and the players who go later will have a positional advantage over you. This is a prime bluff opportunity, as you will get to see what the weak players do before you have to act. It is best to bluff from an early position, as you can then hide your hand if someone re-raises you.
Protect your hand
Vary your play, and do so in such a way that you reward your opponents. If you have A-K in the big blind and the flop comes 2-8-10, raise it up to get the most value for your hand. Tell your story by raising the stakes. ‘You think pocket Jacks will win?’ Sometimes players bite and they will call you on it, but if you bet it out first, they won’t know if you have the better hand.
Bet bluffibly in situations where you know you will have little or no call. Like in a heads-up tournament. In the beginning, dear old fashioned bluffing will probably pay off a lot. Because the other players won’t really know how to read you, a well timed bluff can be very effective.
should you choose to bluff in a no limit poker tournament, should you bluff early or in the middle of a tournament, the aim is to get as many players involved as possible. You are looking to pick up chips along the way. Since the blinds are high, and the number of players is low, this strategy is really useful.
It’s also worth mentioning that you should not bluff if you have a lot of chips on your stack. The high blinds combined with the fact that many players have nothing and will be playing strong hands makes bluffing less effective.
Since you can’t control what cards come out, and with the increase in the blinds, you can’t really keep your opponents in the game. This means you’ll have to take chances and be a more aggressive player.
This is also accompanied with a change in your betting strategy. You’ll need to either pick areas to bluff, or target players and bluff those with weaker hands.
To pick an area to bluff, look at the board for opportunities to do so. You don’t have to be the best card counter, just identifying high card possibilities. When you have a high pair, in caution, even if you bet as high as you feel comfortable, opponents can still have a better kicker.
